If someone walked up to you on the street and asked you to name the top five points guard in the NBA, who would you name?

Most would probably say Steve Nash, Tony Parker, Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, and Chauncey Billups or Deron Williams in some order.

I have a problem with that.

There is this player who plays for Golden State.

You may have heard of him.

His name is Baron Davis and I think he is the most underrated point guard in the league.

Many people forgot about Davis until he lead the Warriors to a shocking upset over the top-seeded Dallas Mavericks in last season’s playoffs.

The guards I named above are all good players even though I do not like the teams some of them play for.

I will give credit where it is due, but let’s look at how Davis stacks up against some of them shall we?

Davis vs. Nash

Steve Nash is arguably the best point guard in the NBA.

After leaving the Dallas Mavericks to become a Phoenix Sun, he led them to the Western Conference Finals his first season in the desert and earned two straight MVP awards.

Nash does not have to score like Davis because Nash gets others involved more often.

That would explain Nash averaging 12 assists per game compared to Davis averaging only eight.

The stat that does not show up in the papers is turnovers.

Nash averages 3.63 turnovers per game compared to Davis’ 2.86.

Davis vs. Parker

Tony Parker uses his quickness very well to get to the basket.

That explains why his field goal percentage is 50 percent, but Davis is a better free-throw shooter.

Davis is shooting just under 76 percent from the charity stripe while Parker is connecting 73.5 percent of the time.

Parker also only averages 6.6 assists per game.

Davis vs. CP3

Chris Paul may be the one guard that is doing just as well if not better than Davis so far this season.

Both are averaging 21.9 points per game, but Paul also has 10.2 assists a game, two more than Davis.

CP3 also averages 2.9 steals every night compared to 2.3 for Davis.

I don’t want to overwhelm you with stats.

I just want to point out that Davis should be mentioned with the other point guards in the league.

He performs as well if not better than those players most people are used to mentioning as the best.

Power Rankings

Top 5

1. Boston

2. Detroit

3. Phoenix

4. Dallas

5. L.A. Lakers

It has been a while since I did my power rankings. I had to include the Lakers. They are just playing good basketball. Dallas finally gets into my top five after starting out with some abysmal games.

Bottom 5

26. Memphis

27. Seattle

28. New York

29. Miami

30. Minnesota

No explanations here. These teams are just playing terrible basketball.
