A piece of paper was lit on fire and stuck in an elevator vent on Sunday, Feb. 24, causing numerous emergency vehicles to flock to Greve Hall. Christopher Hooper, 18, a Greve Hall resident, is being charged with aggravated arson and wreckless endangerment, according to a representative from UT Media Relations.
The paper burned out quickly but generated a lot of smoke, causing the fire department to respond. There was no fire damage, and residents were allowed back into the dorm in less than an hour.
"I thought someone caught something on fire in the kitchen," said Michael Hicks, a freshman who lives on the third floor of Greve. "We evacuated quickly and it all went smoothly."
Hicks knew Hooper, as they lived on the same floor.
"I didn't expect him to go to jail, but I could have seen him doing something not smart," said Hicks.
Hooper is being held on $15,000 bond: $10,000 for the aggravated arson charge, which is a Class A Felony, and $5,000 for the wreckless endangerment charge, which is a Class E Felony.
As of now, Hooper is still an enrolled student at UT and will remain so until his case goes through the Student Judicial Process.
