Power Rankings
Top Five
1. Dallas Stars (40-22-5) - Dallas lost to Calgary last Wednesday, but they've won their three games since. It's hard to believe that Dallas is only five points behind Detroit for the best record.
2. Anaheim Ducks (36-23-7) - The Ducks have won four straight and nine of their last 10. The're right behind Dallas and are poised for a strong late season run.
3. Boston Bruins (33-23-6) - Boston has also won four straight and have a six game point streak. Boston seems to be excelling in almost every major sport right now.
4. Vancouver Canucks (32-22-8) - The Canucks have scored points in seven of eight games and have knocked off four straight. They are only three points behind Minnesota and Calgary for the division lead and have played two fewer games.
5. Carolina Hurricanes (33-28-5) - The Hurricanes finally look like a division leader and a playoff team as they have also scored seven points playing games in their last eight. This week, they beat the two other teams really competing for the division, Washington and Atlanta.
Bottom Five
26. Florida Panthers (28-30-8) - The Panthers lost three of four games this week, getting themselves a spot on my bottom five.
27. Atlanta Thrashers (29-31-4) - The Thrashers are losing grip and falling away from a playoff chance with three losses last week in as many games.
28. Tampa Bay Lightning (25-31-7) - The Lightning lost four games this week and are fitting comfortably into the bottom of the league. The only positive note is they will be getting a nice draft pick.
29. Detroit Red Wings (42-17-6) - Are they going to start playing like the league-leading team they are?
30. Philadelphia Flyers (31-25-7) - The Flyers finally won a game on Monday but they added two more to the loss column in the past week.
Trade deadline suprises
Last week, I talked about how Marian Hossa would probably be traded, and to no surprise, he was. However, landing in Pittsburgh was a shock, but now the Penguins have possibly the best line in hockey when Sidney Crosby gets healthy as the two will line up with rising sensation Evgeni Malkin.
The other big shock on Tuesday was Montreal dealing goaltender Cristobal Huet to the Capitals for a second round pick in 2009. On one end, this was a big steal for the Caps. That being said, what was Montreal thinking? Getting rid of their star goaltender for a relatively unproven backup in Carey Price, with no playoff experience doesn't make much sense.
