To say that Bryan Morgado's pitching debut as a Tennessee Volunteer was impressive would be a dramatic understatement. The redshirt sophomore struck out 12 of the 26 batters he faced to lead Tennessee past Furman 2-1 on Monday.

Morgado, who missed last year as he recovered from elbow surgery, allowed only two hits and walked one batter in his eight innings of work. He began the game by retiring the first 12 batters, including 10 by strikeout.

"For his first career start it's unbelievable," head coach Todd Raleigh said following the contest. "It's the best I've ever seen for someone in their first start. He's worked hard all fall so it's good to see him like perform like that."

Tennessee third basemen Cody Brown entered the game batting .400 in three games and continued swinging confidently as he had three singles in three plate appearances.

Freshman Kentrail Davis went 2-for-3 with an RBI to finish as the only other Vol with multiple hits. Danny Lima's eighth-inning double was the only extra-base hit for the Vols.

Andy Simunic got things started offensively for the Vols in the bottom of the third inning when he reached base on a single and stole second and third base on back-to-back pitches.

Davis then hit a grounded out to shortstop to drive in Simunic for the first run of the game. Furman pitcher Mason Smith walked the next three batters to load the bases, however, Josh Liles was unable to take advantage as he struck out to end the inning.

Furman first baseman Ryan Lee broke-up Morgado's no-hitter in the fifth inning with a he single to right field. Lee then advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a past ball.

A sacrifice fly by Campbell Lewis brought home Lee to knot the score at one before Justin Holloway grounded out to end the inning.

The Volunteers responded to the Furman score in the bottom half of the fifth when Davis scored what would prove to be the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly by Yan Gomes.

Lockwood came in to close out the game in the ninth and the sophomore began by striking out the first batter he faced on three strikes.

Lockwood then threw 12 balls on 13 pitches and walked three batters to load the bases before calming down to strike out the next two batters and end the game.

"I'm somewhat happy with the way they've been throwing," pitching coach Fred Coral said. "Our starters are coming out and doing the job but it's my bullpen that needs to pick it up and I think they'll get going."

The Volunteers will get their next opportunity to test that bullpen Wednesday at Lindsay Nelson Stadium as they take on Austin Peay at 3 p.m.
