The Tennessee Volunteers knocked off the Morehead State Eagles by a score of 8-4 at Lindsey Nelson Stadium Sunday to close off a solid opening weekend of baseball under first-year head coach Todd Raleigh.

The Vols jumped out to an early lead and held on down the stretch to win the game, much like Friday night's matchup with the Eagles.

Tennessee claimed a 1-0 lead in the second inning when leftfielder P.J. Polk singled up the middle and drove in Tanner Moore. Moore previously reached base on a walk and had advanced to third on a Blake Forsythe single.

The Vols stretched the lead in the third inning on Shawn Griffin's solo home run to right field, making the score 2-0.

Josh Liles followed up the homer with a single to center and Moore followed up with another hard hit ball to center, advancing Liles to third base.

Shortsop Danny Lima then hit a hard shot to the left field gap, driving in Liles and moving Moore to third. Forsythe hit a sacrifice fly to center field to cap off the inning and give the Vols a 4-0 lead through the first three frames.

Cody Brown added to Tennessee's lead in the fourth inning when he hit a two-run homer deep to left field, driving in Kentrail Davis who had previously walked, to make the score 6-0.

The Eagles found themselves on the scoreboard for the first time in the fifth inning when J.D. Ashbrook's solo home run to left field trimmed the lead to five runs.

Despite loading the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Vols were unable to further pad their lead after Morehead's Mark Rhodes struck out Davis and Griffin.

The Eagles picked up three runs in the seventh inning and cut the score to 6-4. Howerver, UT managed to pull away by way of a sacrifice fly from Brown in the seventh inning and another from Moore in the eighth.

Junior left-hander Joey Rosas came away with the win after allowing only one run in five solid innings of work.

Overall, the Vols outhit the Eagles 13-7 with Moore, Polk, Lima and Andy Simunic picking up two hits a piece.

The Vols will return to out of conference action tomorrow against Furman at 3 p.m.
