The Lady Vols softball team completed a sweep of the Tennessee Classic Sunday afternoon against the Virginia Cavaliers with a 5-1 win.
Shannon Doepking got Tennessee (14-1) started offensively in the bottom of the first inning with a single to score Chandra Mogan. Doepking led the team with three RBIs on the day.
"It's two parts," said Doepking. "My teammates got on base and I was able to get a couple good hits."
Overall, Tennessee struggled on offense in the game leaving nine players on pase.
"We left way to many runners on," said co-head coach Ralph Weekly. "I felt like we could have had a couple key hits early and we could have closed the game out in five. We played well enough to win. I don't like to play that way."
Tennessee's pitching continued to be dominant as Ashton Ward had another solid outing. Ward allowed four hits and a run in six innings pitched. Ward also had seven strikeouts.
"I had a hard time getting ahead at first," said Ward. "I need to get better about my attitude. When we have a big lead, I need to focus like it's a zero to zero ballgame."
Ward picked up her ninth win on the season.
"She's done really well as a freshman," said Weekly. "She tends to get behind in the count. She is everything I have expected so far."
Next up for the Lady Vols will be a double-header against Liberty on Wednesday. Game one will start at 5 p.m. and game two will follow at approximately 7 p.m.
