The Tennessee Lady Vols clinched the Tennessee Classic and remain perfcet at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium, winning both games of their double header while outscoring their opponents 18-0.
Tennessee (13-1) was soaring in game one of the double header behind the bat of Jennifer Lapicki. With the bases loaded, Lapicki hit a grand slam to lead Tennessee to a 14-0 win against Wagner(0-3).
The Lady Vols came out swinging and put the game out of reach by the end of the second inning. Tonya Callahan doubled off the top of the right field corner wall in the first inning to get the Lady Vols on the scoreboard with the eventual winning run, as Kenora Posey came around from second base.
Five batters later, with the bases loaded on a three-and-one count, Lapicki hit a shot to the lower train tracks behind the left field fence. She finished 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.
"It was three and one, Lapicki said. "I just wanted to get a piece of it and drive some runs in. It came inside and I turned and went with it."
Megan Rhodes picked up where she left off last night against Virginia, allowing no hits or walks in three innings of work. Rhodes was nearly untouchable, striking out five batters.
The Lady Vols continued to stock pile runs on the scoreboard in the second inning. UT drew four walks, a hit by pitch, and had five hits to add eight more runs. The Lady Vols had 14 players with at-bats in the game.
"In a game like that, It's good because you can get a lot of people at bats that normally wouldn't get them ," co-head coach Karen Weekly said. "It's nice to get everybody in the game."
Erinn Webb continued her dominant play at the Tennessee Classic with two hits, two RBIs, a walk and two runs scored.
Danielle Pieroni came into the game in the fourth inning on cleanup duty. In two innings pitched, Pieroni allowed only one hit and had three strikeouts to preserve the five inning shutout.
"I thought she did really well," Weekly said. "She threw strikes and had her change-up working effectively. She has really good stuff. She just needs to get some more innings and get comfortable on the mound."
In game two, the Lady Vols faced Louisiana-Monroe (5-7) in a 4-0 win that relied on solid pitching and defense.
Ashton Ward received lots of help from her teammates in the early innings of a close game as the first six outs were made by the defense as balls were hit into play.
"I felt like it took me an inning or so to warm up," Ward said. "I've never pitched for a team that can hit the ball so well. It's nice to have such a good team to back you up."
Once Ward got her first strikeout, they came more often as she finished with nine in the game. Ward allowed just one hit and no walks.
Tennessee got on the scoreboard with a run in the first inning off a Shannon Doepking single that scored Lillian Hammond from second base.
Doepking hit a blooper in the third inning to score Chandra Mogan. In the fifth inning, she grounded out but was able to get Kenora Posey home for her third RBI of the game.
"Our leadoff hitters did a really good job getting on," Doepking said. I just came up and had some blooper hits, but three RBIs. I give all the credit to the hitters before me."
The Lady Vols have one more game left in the Tennessee Classic against Virginia at noon. Tennessee beat Virginia on Friday night 8-0.
