The fifth-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols notched their second win at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium, continuing their dominance of the 2008 Tennessee Classic. After an 8-2 win over BYU on Thursday, UT (11-1) won 8-0 over the Virginia Cavaliers (1-6) in five innings.
Sophomore center fielder Anita Manuma gave Tennessee a comfortable lead in the second inning when she hit a three-run homerun to put the Lady Vols up 5-0.
"Tonya and Shannon, they'll let us know how the pitcher is pitching and what to look for," Manuma said. "I just told myself to go up there, first pitch and attack it.
Megan Rhodes started off the game for the Lady Vols with two quick three-and-out innings of pitching and the Lady Vols responded with solid run support. Rhodes allowed one hit and had six strikeouts.
"We got great production out of our offense and it really helped to end the game in five innings," Rhodes said. "Our offense has been dominant. As a pitching staff, that's really been comforting. We're not going out their feeling like we have to hold a team to zero or one run in a game."
Virginia beat Louisiana-Monroe in the previous game of the Classic 6-3, but had no such luck against the Lady Vols.
"Virginia is a very good hitting team," co-head coach Karen Weekly said. "Megan Rhodes did a very nice job with them. We watched them hit the ball all over the park in the game before. It was a good outing for her."
The Lady Vols second inning performance created a comfortable lead.
After a Shannon Doepking walk and an error on a Tiffany Huff bunt, Erinn Webb singled to bring in two runs. Jennifer Lapicki walked, setting up Anita Manuma with two runners and no outs.
Manuma wasted no time, as she swung on the first pitch from Karla Wilburn sending it over the center field fence. The home run was her second of the season, and pushed their lead to 5-0.
The Lady Vols added another run in the third inning on a Webb double off the wall in right field. Huff singled to get on base and scored on the Webb hit. Webb had three RBI's on two hits and a walk in three at-bats.
"It was a really big win for us," Webb said. "They had just come off a win and we knew they were really pumped up. We came out swinging. Our pitching was really good tonight and our hitting came through."
In the fifth inning, UT loaded the bases, and singles by Jennifer Lapicki and Manuma gave UT eight runs, ending the game. Manuma finished with four RBI's.
The Lady Vols are in the middle of a five game tournament style weekend, their third of the season.
"This is the time of the year when you want to see what you have and see how your team is going to respond in certain situations," Weekly said. "They are responding really well. I like the way the kids are playing. They are fighting every game. They didn't sit on the lead tonight, pushing to get eight runs."
Up next for the Lady Vols in the Classic will be Wagner tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. The Lady Vols will then play Louisiana-Monroe at 5 p.m. to finish the double-header.
