A shooter opened fire on the Northern Illinois University campus on Thursday afternoon, killing at least six people, including himself, and injuring 16 more. Most of the injuries were sustained to the head, according to CNN.
NIU released the name of the shooter early Friday morning. Steven Kazmierczak, of Champaign, Illinois, was a graduate student in the spring of 2007, however, he was not enrolled at the University at the time of the shooting.
Dan Ciamprone, a freshman at NIU, was in one of the rooms in which the shooting happened. According to Ciamprone, Kazmierczak wearing a black skull cap.

“He didn’t say anything,” said Ciamprone. “He just walked in and started shooting. We all got down immediately.”
According to Ciamprone, Kazmierczak started with a shotgun, and once he had unloaded that, used a pistol.
Ciamprone was able to crawl out of the room while Kazmierczak was changing weapons.
Kazmierczak died from a self-inflicted wound, according to the NIU Web site.
Captain Jeff Severs of the UT Police Department spoke confidently of UT's response system in such a situation. He was quick, however, to not condemn NIU's response.
"I'm not going to speculate how well they responded," said Severs, "They're still investigating, and probably will for a while. They're still investigating the [Virginia Tech shootings] and how that happened."
Severs also urged students to sign up for the UT Alert system, which was put into place after the Virginia Tech shootings last year.
"We currently have over 15,000 people signed up for the UT Alert system, but ideally we would have everybody," said Severs.
