Softball among many big winners for UT last week

UT nearly swept the entire week with the tennis and softball teams winning in addtion to wins by the Vol and Lady Vol basketball teams.

  • Vols track and field: Two Vols had big weekends at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York. In the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles on Saturday, Jangy Addy posted an NCAA automatic-qualifying mark of 7.67. Addy also set a personal record and NCAA provisional-qualifying mark in the long jump on Saturday, which he won with a distance of 24–8 1/4 inches. On Sunday, Rubin Williams stole the show when he ran the fastest 200-meter in the world this year. Williams set a meet record and NCAA automatic-qualifying mark of 20.66.
  • Lady Vols track and field: Lady Vols Brittany Sheffey, Brittany Jones, Phoebe Wright and Sarah Bowman led the way this weekend for the Lady Vols as their Distance Medley Relay team won at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet and set a NCAA automatic-qualifying mark of 11:07.89. Wright also won the 800-meter run with a NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 2:07.19. Courtney Champion won the 60-meter final with a NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 7.32.
  • Vols tennis: The No. 16 Tennis team continued its dominance and improved to 7–0 on the season with a win over previously undefeated Louisville. twenty-eigthth ranked Boris Conkic and ninety-third ranked J.P. Smith led the Vols to a 5 – 2 win over the Cardinals.
  • Softball: The No. 6 Lady Vols showed that they were a force to be reckoned with this year as they stormed through opening weekend with five dominating wins.
    • On Friday, Ashton Ward and Danielle Pieroni pitched 5 innings of shutout ball as Tonya Callahan hit her first homerun to help the Lady Vols beat Utah State 8–0 in 5 innings by mercy rule.
    • Later that night, the Lady Vols topped UC Davis 5–2 as Megan Rhodes had 11 strikeouts. Callahan had 2 RBIs and Jennifer Lapicki hit a homerun.
    • In the early game on Saturday, Ward took on No. 20 Oregon and pitched a one-hitter with 8 strikeouts. Lillian Hammond led the Lady Vols with 2 runs scored as they defeated the Ducks 5–0.
    • Saturday night, the Lady Vols beat Cal Poly 8–0 in 5 innings. Rhodes had 7 strikeouts and allowed only two hits. Hammond and Kenora Posey both stole 2 bases each and Hammond scored 3 runs.
    • On Sunday, the Lady Vols wrapped up the weekend with an 8–1 win over No. 18 Oregon State. Ward pitched 6 innings, giving up just 3 hits and 4 strikeouts. Lapicki hit her second homerun of the season and Anita Manuma hit her first homerun.

This Week

  • Vols tennis will have a non-conference match against Kentucky on Tuesday in Lexington.
  • Vols golf will play their opening round of the John Hayt Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla. On Sunday. The meet will continue through Tuesday.
  • Lady Vols softball will play in the USF Best Western Tourney in Tampa, Fla. over the weekend. On Saturday, they will play Florida Gulf Coast and Hofstra. On Sunday, the Lady Vols take on Ole Miss and South Florida. They will wrap things up Monday when they play Florida A&M.
  • The Lady Vols track and field team will be in action on Friday and Saturday at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
  • Lady Vols tennis will be back in action as they visit Michigan on Friday and Indiana on Sunday.
