The UT Symphony Orchestra will perform February 17 at the Alumni Memorial Building James R. Cox Auditorium.
The concert is the final stop of a 4-day tour of Virginia and Tennessee. It is Sunday, February 17 at 4 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
It will feature a combination of classical and jazz music performed by students, faculty musicians and world-renowned guest artists.
"The point of this concert is to go from classical to jazz - a journey of music," Stephanie Wierwille, violin, said. "It's a lot of fun to listen to."
UT faculty artist Cathy Leach, trumpet, will perform a classical-jazz concerto with trumpeter Marvin Stamm of the Marvin Stamm/Bill Mays Duo. Mays, a pianist, will also be featured on the concert.
Rusty Holloway, bass, and Keith Brown, drums, of the UT Studio Music and Jazz faculty will lend their talents to the orchestra. The orchestra is conducted by James Fellenbaum.
To achieve a jazzier sound, a saxophone section has been added to the instrumentation of the orchestra. Four members of Dr. Connie Frigo's studio will play on works by Dmitri Shostakovich and Darius Milhaud.
Ben Robinette, a junior majoring in saxophone performance, said the experience of playing with the orchestra is "unparalleled."
"This is something that doesn't happen for saxophone often," Robinette said. "Considering the tradition of the symphony orchestra, it almost feels like we're intruding."
The concert series is part of the Symphony Orchestra's "World Tour of Music" season for 2007-08. The repertoire for the season reflects the different cultures of orchestral music from around the globe.
