The new Knoxville Skatepark opened Jan. 31 at Tyson Park after two years of preparation, finally giving eager skateboarders a place to practice their hobby.
The 15,000-square-foot skatepark offers multiple ramps, ledges and rails.  Skateboards, BMX bikes and skates are allowed, and all participants are required to wear a helmet.  The park is open 8 a.m.- 9 p.m. daily.
The opening of the skatepark included a ribbon-cutting ceremony and speeches from Knox County Mayor Mike Ragsdale and Knoxville City Mayor Bill Haslam. Thanks went out to Tony Hawk's foundation, Lamar Advertising Company, private donators and the city and county governments for their contributions.
The skatepark is accepting donations to provide even more for the area.  The Knoxville Skatepark website is now selling calendars, shirts and much more to help the cause.
