The event will last from 7:00 p.m. Friday night to 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning. Becca Anderson, President of the Moral Commitee, explains, "The event lasts for 14 hours to represent the amount of time that some children must stay awake after treatments or tests at the hospital.
Logan Clark, Dance Marathon VP of Events, encourages students to attend because, "The money that Dance Marathon raises for the hospital each year goes straight to helping families afford all necessary treatments for their children. When you see the kids at the event, it all becomes clear why it is so important to give up this one night in your life to honor these little heroes who are dealing with things that children should never have to face. -Logan Clark
Dance Marathon is the largest student-run philanthropy in the country. Campuses all across the nation participate in the event to benefit Children's Miracle Network hospitals. The first Dance Marathon was held at Penn State University in 1973. UT has been participating since 1995. Since 1995 students at UT have raised more than $770,000 for the hospital.
Dance Marathon members have held fundraising events all year long and have sent out 3,000 letters to family and friends explaining the event and requesting donations. Anticipating 500 dancers to attend this year's event, Dance Marathon executives hope to raise $100,000 for the hospital.
All UT students are invited to participate in the event. Students may register in room 305 of the UC or online. Each dancer is expected to raise $175 for the cause.
