Extravagant weddings are ridiculous

Every little girl dreams of the day when she will finally be a princess and receive her fairytale ending: getting married on a horse by the sunset. While this is, of course, a joke, nowadays it's becoming more of a reality as weddings are skyrocketing to an average amount of $20,000 to $25,000.

So just what are these brides and grooms spending all of their and their families' hard earned cash on? Let's take a look at the two most ridiculous items that that are breaking the bank.

1) Tiara- This offers another excuse for bride-zilla to rear her ugly head. Every woman already feels power hunger when she plans her wedding. The second a tiara touches her head, it's over; she'll officially go into dictator mode. Tiaras can range from a couple of dollars, like the ones at Claire's or The Icing, to a couple of thousand dollars for a precious family heirloom.

2) A butterfly release- Kirkwood Butterfly Company located in Clearwater, Florida offers the magical chance to release butterflies when the "I do's" are said. Just how much can this lovely display chalk on to the bill? It runs from the cheapest at $96 for 24 butterflies, all the way to $300 for 100 butterflies. Now, what groom with both testicles would agree to this?

This brings me to divulge about one of the most expensive weddings ever. The wedding of crowned Prince of Dubai in 1981 cost an astounding $44.5 million, which in today's economy would cost over $100 million dollars.

The family built their own stadium, and the celebration lasted a total of seven days. To top that off, the 30 days prior to the wedding were comprised of celebration as well. Was this a case of a very lucky woman or simply a waste of the country's money? I think you can decide for yourself.

I hope when it finally comes time to tie the knot, you all can make rational decisions about what is important and what is not. As for me, I'm heading to Gatlinburg to a $50 drive-thru cathedral and I'm wearing my old prom dress.

When a friend announces she's starting to plan a wedding one should take that as a cue to find a new friend.
