With the coming of Earth Day, an initiative dubbed Divide the Ride is making an old tradition green.
Divide the Ride is a free carpooling service available to residents in all 50 states. The availability of the initiative is made possible by its web-based technology. It was designed to help reduce the use of gasoline in the everyday commutes of American families.
The effectiveness of Divide the Ride is not limited to the environment. With the record high gas prices, this program also tries to help families save money.
"Divide the Ride is proving to be a valuable and much needed carpooling tool for parents across the country as families continue to feel the pinch of the highest gas prices in U.S. history, Bryn Tindall, founder of Divide the Ride, said.
The service, which was launched in fall 2007, incorporates web technology in its organization of carpools throughout the country. Parents can sign up for the program and create a carpool with others around the area. The Divide the Ride Web site will then create a calendar based on each family's individual schedule. Reminders are sent through the web and text messages to each parent involved.

That is a really cool idea. I wonder if they do a background check or something on the parents though. But it is still a great idea.
