For over 16 years UT water polo has been practicing for, hosting and traveling to the best national tournaments in the collegiate club association.

For those who don't know, water polo, as defined by the dictionary, is a goal game similar to soccer that is played in water by teams of swimmers using a ball resembling a soccer ball.

I believe UT water polo player Chris Cox explains it a little better, "Water polo is basically a swim meet where someone is trying to drown you the entire time...oh and you have to score goals."

The UT water polo team is co-ed, and was started in 1992. The following year the team hosted its first ever tournament, the Dogwood Invitational.

Since then the tradition has been going strong. The team just hosted the 15th annual Dogwood Invitational tournament on the weekend of April 12, 2008.

This year's Dogwood tournament was an eight team competition with teams from all around the country including; Binghampton University , upstate New York, University of South Carolina and the University of Washington, Seattle.

The University of Illinois won the two-day tournament beating Dynamo, a club team from Atlanta, in overtime. Each team played a total of four games.

Overall the tournament went extremely well. The biggest complaint of the weekend would have had to be the sunburns that the players got on Saturday.

The UT water polo team has been an active club on campus since 1992. They are a year-round team that competes in the CWPA, the Collegiate Water Polo Association, in the fall semester and attends invitational tournaments  around the country in the spring semester.

The team practices in the outdoor pool on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. For more information about the team visit their web site or contact Recsports .
