No. 9 Tennessee traded wins with the Ole Miss Rebels in a Wednesday night doubleheader.
Tennessee (41-8, 11-7 Southeastern Conference) was shutout in game one, losing 1-0. In game two, Tonya Callahan hit her team-leading 13th homerun to help the Lady Vols to a 6-2 win.
The Lady Vols also had a lot of help from pitcher Ashton Ward as she pitched 10 2/3 innings in the doubleheader, allowing only two runs and picking up her 22nd win of the season.
Tennessee was unable to produce much offense in game one as Ole Miss pitcher Tara Willitt gave up just three hits and two walks.
The Rebels (20-25, 4-18 SEC) got their only run of the game when Lauren Grill hit a home run off Megan Rhodes. The run proved to be the winner when Tennessee failed to score in the bottom of the seventh inning.
"The pitch was thrown right down the middle of the plate," head coach Ralph Weekly said. "The girl promptly hit it over the fence."
Rhodes pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and one run.
Ward pitched the remainder of the game keeping Tennessee close. Ward allowed only one hit in 3 2/3 innings.
"We have to help each other out," Ward said. "Sometimes the pitchers struggle. Sometimes the hitters struggle. It's going to happen. We have things we all need to work on."
The Lady Vols had a long talk with head coach Ralph Weekly in the break between the games and senior leader Callahan had advice for the team as well."I told them between games that you have to play relaxed," said Callahan. "I said, 'remember how it felt to play relaxed Saturday when we had nothing to lose?' If we go out there and play our own way and we would win the second game."
Tennessee responded quickly as they took the lead for good in the first inning.
After Kenora Posey singled and Chandra Mogan reached on an error, Callahan was intentionally walked to get to Shannon Doepking. With the bases loaded, Doepking singled to score Posey and Mogan.
Callahan also scored in the inning on a sacrifice bunt by Tiffany Huff.
Ward pitched effectively throughout the early part of the game, holding a shutout until the sixth inning.
Erinn Webb tripled and later scored in the fourth inning on a passed ball.
Callahan hit a home run, and Huff got her second RBI of the game to give Tennessee a six-run lead in the fifth inning.
Ole Miss was able to get two runs on consecutive hits in the top of the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough to catch Tennessee as the Lady Vols won game two 6-2.
Ward finished with five strikeouts in seven innings of work, while allowing five hits and one walk. The win moves her record to 22-3.
Weekly, however, wasn't happy with picking up only one win on the evening.
"We needed the sweep tonight to maintain our status," Weekly said. "They came in here 3-17 in the SEC. I'm very disappointed."
The Lady Vols will host No. 14 LSU at Lee Stadium for a three-game series this weekend. Saturday's first game is slated for 1 p.m. FSN will broadcast game one and game three of the series.
