Jones provides different dynamic for Vols

Gerald Jones, the quarterback-turned-wide receiver from Oklahoma, has made quite an impression on Tennessee fans.

The sophomore caught a game-saving touchdown in overtime against Kentucky last season. He also lined up at quarterback and ran for a touchdown in the Outback Bowl.

He even tackled Arkansas running back Darren McFadden, the Southeastern Conference's second all-time leading rusher, in the open field during his freshman campaign.

Not bad for a guy who did not see extensive playing time until the seventh game of the season.

Jones had an impressive résumé before he signed with Tennessee. He played quarterback at Millwood High in Oklahoma City where he became a four-star recruit and Army All-American. He has had to adjust to playing wide receiver during his time as a Volunteer.

"Everything is different from route running to catching the ball to getting your eyes around," Jones said. "I had to stay after practice and work on [my routes]. It's a big adjustment but a little extra work is helping me."

Jones said one thing that does not bother him is contact.

"I'm used to getting hit," he said with a laugh. "I get hit a lot in practice and during the scrimmages."

In addition to learning a new position, Jones is also adjusting to the schemes of first-year offensive coordinator Dave Clawson. The wide-out is not worried about the talk of the offense struggling this spring.

"Honestly, we are about sixty percent of the way," Jones said. "Even though the whole offense is in we still have to polish up and get used to it. Once that happens we'll be alright. It's all about repetitions right now."

Jones had seven catches for 55 yards and one touchdown during Saturday's scrimmage.
