Tennessee's offense did not have as tough a time moving the ball in Saturday's scrimmage as they have had in the past two scrimmages.

Jonathan Crompton finished the day 17-of-22 for 146 yards with one interception, and carried the ball seven times for 19 yards and two touchdowns.

Arian Foster also had an impressive showing in limited work, carrying the ball seven times for 38 yards and catching two passes for 23 yards.

Coach Phillip Fulmer was pleased, but still sees some things that need to be worked on, including ball security.

I thought overall Jonathan had a good day, a real good day. Head coach Philip Fulmer on Jonathan Crompton's play

"The first [interception] was Jonathan being hard headed and Luke ran the wrong route," Fulmer said. "A more experienced quarterback is going to pull that down or find another receiver or use his legs to get three or four yards. I thought overall Jonathan had a good day, a real good day."

The defense, however, made some plays of its own.

Linebacker Rico McCoy had the play of the day, intercepting a B.J. Coleman pass and returning it 53 yards down to the two-yard line.

"I just dropped into my zone and made the play," McCoy said. "I think the defense played pretty well today."

The defensive end trio of Ben Martin, Wes Brown and Robert Ayers also made noise. All three had two sacks apiece. Martin had five tackles while Brown and Ayers recorded four tackles each.

"Robert Ayers, Ben [Martin] and Wes Brown, those three guys will give us a better speed dimension coming off the edge than we have had in a couple of years," Fulmer said.

Daniel Lincoln continued his freshman All-America form on special teams, going 5-of-6 on field goals.

Vols look for depth behind foster

With an established starter in Foster, Tennessee will focus on finding more options in the backfield, and making sure Foster simply stays sharp and injury free.

Freshman running back Tauren Poole made the most of his opprotunities in the backfield as he finished with 17 carries for 45 yards and two catches for 14 yards. The Toccoa, Ga., native graduated a semester early from high school and enrolled at Tennessee, allowing him to participate in spring practice.

"Tauren's a tough kid that loves to play football," running backs coach Stan Drayton said. "The more reps I give him, the better he's going to get. He's not going to wear down and he's an unselfish player."

Lennon Creer had a 37-yard carry early in the scrimmage and finished the day with 47 yards on the ground.
