The Lady Vols fought off a shaky start and defeated the Georgia Lady Bulldogs in both games of Saturday's rainy double-header. The Lady Vols came from behind in game one to win 6-4 and dominated game two winning 9-0 to pick up two Southeastern Conference wins.

In game one of the doubleheader against Georgia (35-10, 8-5 SEC), the Lady Vols (35-7, 9-6 SEC) got behind quickly as the Lady Bulldogs scored 3 runs in the first two innings to take the lead. Megan Wiggins hit a triple in the first to score Victoria Sanders and Alisa Goler.

Christina Reed scored for Georgia on a Kristin Schnake double to give the Lady Bulldogs a three-run lead.

Megan Rhodes was pulled midway through the third inning after struggling right away. Danielle Pieroni pitched 2 and 1/3 innings of relief to keep Tennessee close.

"Sometimes I have to spend more time in the bullpen staying warm," Rhodes said. "I didn't do that in the first game but I think I got better as the day went on."

The Lady Vols answered back in the bottom of the second as they took advantage of a wild pitch and two throwing errors by Georgia. After a Tiffany Huff single and an Erinn Webb walk, a wild pitch allowed them to advance to second and third.

With two outs, Kenora Posey hit a grounder but reached first when the throw was dropped. Huff scored when the throw went pass the catcher and Webb came around to score as well.

Georgia added its final run of the game and day in the fourth inning when Sanders singled to score Schnake.

The Lady Vols took the lead in the next two innings, adding two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Lillian Hammond scored in the fourth when Posey hit a grounder to an empty right field that turned into a triple. Right field was empty as Georgia switched their defense to 5 infielders for the speedy Posey. Posey later scored on a Nicole Kajitani single.

Rhodes came back in and pitched in the end of the fourth and fifth innings. She finished the game allowing three runs on three hits and three walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.

The Lady Vols took their first lead in the fifth when Shannon Doepking and Huff scored on a Jennifer Lapicki double. The lead held as the Lady Vols won 6-4.

"She was throwing outside," Lapicki said. "I was trying to go with it and get it to right field and get a base hit."

Rhodes was credited with the win as Ashton Ward picked up the save, pitching the final two innings without allowing a hit.

Tennessee jumped out to a quick start in game two as patience proved key. In the first inning, Hammond, Tonya Callahan, Doepking, and Huff drew four straight walks for the Lady Vols. Lapicki then singled to give Tennessee two more runs.

"I thought Jen Lapicki hit the ball really well in clutch situations," head coach Ralph Weekly said.

Pieroni doubled two batters later to bring home Huff and Lapicki and give the Lady Vols a five-run first inning.

Callahan hit her 10th homerun of the season in the second inning to give the Lady Vols a six-run lead.

"Tonya Callahan continues to be one of the best impact players I have seen in 23 years of coaching, Weekly said.

"I thought as a whole today, we adjusted well to all the pitchers," said Callahan. "I think it took us a while in the first game to adjust, but we did get on her."

Ward pitched 2 and 1/3 innings before being relieved by Rhodes. Ward finished with one strikeout while allowing two hits, no runs, and a walk.

"Our pitchers had some very good innings and then some not so good innings," said Weekly. "Megan Rhodes finished really strong in game two."

The game slowed down as the mist picked up into a light rain through the middle innings. However, in the bottom of the fifth inning, Lapicki hit her fifth homerun of the season to improve the lead to 7-0.

In the sixth inning, Hammond reached on an error. Callahan finished the game off with her second homerun of the game, and 11th of the season, as the Lady Vols won 9-0 in six innings.

"It always feels good," said Callahan. "Especially to end the game and hit two homeruns in one game."

Rhodes picked up her second win of the day by allowing only one hit and one walk in 3 and 2/3 innings of work.
