The talk of the second football scrimmage this spring was not about offense or defense. It was about the John Chavis high step.

Dennis Rogan provided the play of the day when he intercepted an errant Jonathan Crompton pass and returned it 82 yards for a touchdown, while Chavis danced down the sideline.

"I don't know, probably the last time we had a return that long." Chavis said when asked about the last time he moved like that. "[Dennis] did a great job breaking on the ball. Got us out of a bad situation we put ourselves in. We expect the back end to be our strength."

The defense dominated the scrimmage for a second straight week, with the secondary coming up with five interceptions. DeAngelo Willingham led the way with two picks, while Rogan, Anthony Anderson and walk-on Brent Freeman had one apiece.

"I know we had the swagger," safety Demetrice Morley said of the defensive backfield. "We call ourselves the goon squad. We have to get takeaways. Defense wins championships and offense sells tickets."

Morley, who missed last season for the Vols after being dismissed from the university, has come back strong after being re-admitted this spring. The former five-star recruit blocked a 27-yard field goal attempt and had six tackles on Saturday.

"[Morley's] on a mission," defensive backs coach Larry Slade said.

Starting quarterback Jonathan Crompton did not have his best day, as he threw three interceptions with only one touchdown pass. Two of the interceptions were the results of receivers slipping. However, Crompton took full responsibility for the miscues.

"We're big time college football players," said Crompton. "We should expect to go against guys like [our defensive backs] and them. On offense we're good enough to beat them and that's what we expect to do."

Offensively, Luke Stocker had a 55-yard catch and run to set up Crompton's touchdown pass to Josh Briscoe on the next play. Arian Foster provided the longest run of the day with a 19-yard gain near the end of the scrimmage, and Rogan had a 53-yard punt return in addition to his long interception return.

Crompton's getting some great looks against our Defensive Backs, but his decision making is scaring me a little.
In both scrimmages combined he's got 4 INT compared to just 2 TDs.
