The Campus Beautification Committee will host Fall Campus Clean-up Day behind the University Center at 11 a.m. on Sunday Sept. 30. The event is co-sponsored with S.P.E.A.K , Students Promoting Environmental Action in Knoxville.

With an average turnout of 120 students for the clean-up days, the student-run organization is able to clean most of campus and part of Cumberland Ave. of trash. The volunteers will also recycle paper flyers and other"We also aim to raise the reputation of our campus above that of a concrete jungle." Kaylee Vickers, co-director of CBC reusable materials.

Kimberly Pettigrew, co-director of the Campus Beautification Committee, said that the main goals of the committee are to improve awareness among students about beautification and trying to improve campus beauty through clean-up days, Adopt-A-Spot, cigarette butt removals and other programs sponsored by the committee.

"We have a program in the spring called ‘Zero and One' where students pledge to throw down zero pieces of trash and pick one up a day," Pettigrew said.

The committee is a branch of the Student Government Association and is one of the nine committees under student services.

"Our main goals are to make the campus more environmentally friendly in ways students appreciate and respond to. We try to raise awareness and take direct action. We also aim to raise the reputation of our campus above that of a concrete jungle," said co-director Kaylee Vickers.

The Campus Beautification Committee meets every other Tuesday. Food for this semester's clean-up day participants will be donated from local Knoxville restaurants.
