The Tennessee Volunteers junior varsity football squad defeated the Hargrave Military Academy Tigers 37-20 Thursday night at Neyland Stadium in the Vols first JV game since 1992.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Nick Stephens had a solid performance throwing for 162 yards and two touchdowns.
"You know what you can do but when you're actually put to the test, it really shows what you can do," said Stephens. "The team came out and played well as a unit."
Senior tailback Roy Olasimbo led the Vols running game with 119 yards on 22 carries and found the end zone three times.
Dennis Rogan also had an excellent night for the Vols as the freshman defensive back finished with a total of 176 return yards on five kick returns and an interception return.
"Dennis is a football player, a very good football player," said offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe. "I'm excited about the type of career he'll have and the immediate impact he could have on the return game."
Sophomore receiver Bram Cannon had a fingertip catch on the sideline for a 49-yard touchdown reception, and freshman Kevin Cooper had the Vols other touchdown reception on a 29-yard catch in the fourth quarter.
Sinclair Cannon led the Vols on defense with seven tackles while Derrick Furlow added four tackles and an interception.
"They're a talented group of young players and they're just going to get better with all of this work, they are," Head Coach Phillip Fulmer said. "It's great to see. It's great to see guys making progress like they are."
