East Tennesseeans can sample 40 different types of chili this weekend while helping to raise money for the Second Harvest Food Bank.
The 2nd Annual East Tennessee Chili Cook-Off will take place Saturday, Sept. 29, at the World's Fair Park from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event features 40 cooking teams competing for a chili champion crown, among other prizes.
Restaurant and amateur teams compete separately for the award for best chili. Winners are also chosen in special categories, such as hottest chili and most unique recipe.
Admission for the event is $10, including a tasting pass for all the chili varieties and access to all entertainment events. Children 10 and under get in free.
"Entertainment begins at 2 p.m. when the gates open. At 5 p.m. there will be a chili pepper eating contest, and we have lots of events for kids," said Susan Martino, coordinator of the event.
Entertainment will also include live music and prize announcements. Everyone can enter a raffle for a chance to win prizes and to decide which chili is the best with the Audience Choice Award.
The Kids FunZone will feature an inflatable slide and face painting.
All proceeds from the event will go to the Second Harvest Food Bank, a non-profit organization that fights hunger through food programs and education. The organization has a partnership with the largest bean maker in the world, Bush Brothers & Co., who helped support the event.
