The American team won the Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations held on its home soil in front of over 75,000 fans in attendance and a live television audience throughout Europe. Ricky Carmichael, Ryan Villopoto and Tim Ferry put together one of the most dominant performances in Motocross of Nations history on their home track at Budds Creek to win Team USA's 18th Chamberlain Trophy.
Motocross of Nations Results
- USA – 8 points
- France – 34 points
- Belgium – 35 points
- Italy – 57 points
- Great Britain – 63 points
- Spain – 68 points
All three motos in the format for the event were won by Americans. Villopoto won moto one, which consisted of riders in MX1 and MX2 classes. Villopoto also won moto two, which consisted of riders in MX2 and Open classes.
Carmichael, who declared that the Motocross of Nations was his last race in the sport of motocross earlier this year, won the final moto between the MX1 and Open classes.
In moto one, Villopoto pulled the holeshot and led the race from start to finish, pulling a large margin over second place rider Chad Reed of Australia. Carmichael, the other American rider in moto one, crashed in turn two but came from 39th place after lap one to finish right behind Reed.
In moto two Villopoto again pulled the holeshot, and, in a very similar performance to the first race, won by a large margin. Ferry was the other American rider in moto two and, much like Carmichael in race one, had a crash coming out of the start turn. Ferry moved through the pack to finish fourth in the moto.
Ferry was a late addition to Team USA. The position was originally filled by James Stewart, but he injured his knee in the AMA nationals and had to surrender his spot on the team.
In moto three, Carmichael pulled the holeshot and pulled away from the field. Ferry had a mid pack start but quickly worked his way toward the front. Midway through the race Ferry and Belgian rider Steve Ramon had a close battle. Ferry passed Ramon and pulled away, solidifying second place in the moto.

Grant Langston, the 2007 AMA Motocross National Champion from South Africa, did not have as strong of a weekend as he would have liked. In moto one, Langston had a crash and finished 22nd, but in moto three Langston had a more solid performance finishing third.
After a great second place finish in moto one, Reed had a bad start and a crash in moto three, forcing him to retire from the race after one lap.
One of the biggest foreign disappointments on the weekend came from Italian rider Antonio Cairoli. Cairoli came to the Motocross of Nations after winning the FIM World Championship in 2007 in the MX2 class.
He was expected to be a main challenger to Villopoto, but in moto one Cairoli had bike trouble which dropped him from the race. In moto two a bad start followed by a crash put him down a lap rather quickly. Cairoli did pull in behind Villopoto during the moto and was able to match his pace, but only for a few laps.
Another big blow to the chances for International teams to beat Team USA occurred when Team New Zealand did not qualify for the main event.
Ben Townley was injured in a practice crash on Saturday that kept him from attempting to qualify. Without one of their riders, New Zealand had no chance of qualifying.
Townley was the only rider who consistently ran with and beat Villopoto during the AMA Nationals making it very significant for him and New Zealand to miss the competition.
