Florida 59, Tennessee 20.
I could say no more and my point would get across, but I feel like saying more.
The most troubling part of the loss was the lack of heart displayed late in the ballgame. After Arian Foster and Erik Ainge fumbled the exchange on a handoff that was returned for a touchdown, the Vols effectively laid down and died. From the time the ball hit the ground Tennessee was outscored 31-0.
Even before that, though, the team was never really in that ballgame. It may have appeared they were on the scoreboard, but that was just false hope. The Vols were dominated in that game from start to finish.
Foster and LaMarcus Coker combined for just 20 touches. That's two of the three best offensive players the Vols have and they were sorely underused against the Gators.
Overall the Vols were outrushed 255-37. At halftime Erik Ainge had already thrown 29 passes, despite it being just a two possession game until late in the second quarter.
How could that possibly be when 15 out of the last 17 games between Tennessee and Florida have been won by the team that had more success running the football?
The 39-point loss is the largest margin of defeat during the Phil Fulmer era. Yes, a worse loss than was ever handed to the Vols by Steve Spurrier at Florida or Tom Osborne at Nebraska.
Something has got to change. I, as I'm sure many of you out there, don't follow Tennessee football to see a team go 9-4 yearly and that's about the most we can expect for the current team.
I'm not calling for any coaching changes right now. I don't believe in firing a coach in the middle of the season, but barring a miracle 10-game winning streak something has to give.
Blast me if you so choose, but consider these facts:
1) Against current SEC head coaches, Phil Fulmer and company have a record of 24-24 (12-3 against Bobby Johnson at Vandy, Rich Brooks at Kentucky, and Houston Nutt at Arkansas).
2) Versus the other three coaches that have made back-to-back bowl appearances out of the Eastern division (Urban Meyer, Mark Richt, Steve Spurrier) Fulmer holds a record of 6-15.
3) The Vols have not gone undefeated at Neyland Stadium since Tee Martin left campus in 1999.
Those facts make my argument, but none of those are the stats that are most convincing to me. The numbers that do it for me are these: over the past five seasons plus the first three games of this season Tennessee has a record of 43-23. That's a winning percentage of 65 percent.
Now, check out this list of coaches who won a higher percentage of games over their last five seasons before being let go by their schools.
1) Larry Coker, Miami, 48-15 (76 percent)
2) Frank Solich, Nebraska, 50-15 (77 percent)
3) John Cooper, Ohio State, 46-15 (75 percent)
4) Jim Donnan, Georgia, 40-19 (68 percent)
Let's also not forget that Lloyd Carr is also under immense heat at Michigan and is widely considered to be in danger of getting fired. His record over the last five years is 48-18, good for 73 percent.
Fulmer's last three years are also very comparable to Ron Zook's three years at Florida.
I know there are those who will say if the Vols decide to go in a different direction they will have a hard time finding a coach to come to Knoxville. That's a ridiculous claim.
UT is at worst one of the top 20 coaching positions in college football and it always will be, and it is time to start treating it that way.
I hope I am wrong. I hope this team runs off nine straight wins and finds a way to make a BCS bowl game. If that happens, I will be the first to admit I was wrong.
I just don't see anything to make me think that's a possibility right now, and if the season plays out the way it appears to be headed it will be time for things to change on Rocky Top.

I agree 100% I was a little iffy before i read this article, but the stats you just threw at me took me off the fence. Great research. I'm still going to try and be optimistic and hope for 10-0. Time will tell.

I agree 100% We have to change something. I Love TN Football but I'm tired of going to work on a military base and getting asked the question "HOW ABOUT THOSE VOLS" I will always support the players.

Love the article. Nice research also. Before the season begain I said Fulmer is right where he needs to be and Cutcliffe and Chavis are the best assistants around. Now I want a change. I want someone with some new style and intensity on the field. Urban Meyer has given Florida fans something to look forward to. Man and he has a great style of coaching. We have the talent and have recruited the top 5 class in the nation. Why are they not producing. I followed Eric Berry up through the recruiting process and new he was going to be GREAT. But we have lost too much ground to impress any of the voters for a good bowl game. So heres to next year and some new blood with new style! GO VOLS! I too am in the military in the Air Force in Arkansas and HATE going to work and hearing 'How bout them vols'!

Zook was only at UF for 3 years, not 5. He coached from 2002 through 2004.
Go Gators
Derick commented, on September 18, 2007 at 7:35 p.m.:
Great research once again and I could not agree more. Fulmer has decent stability, but you can never truly anticipate winning any more than nine games a year if were lucky and championships are a near impossibility. Every year we VOL fans wish, hope, and dream for more of what the players are truly deserving of and that is serious national recognition and a BCS Bowl game win. Unfortunately, Tennessee football appears to be on a downward spiral and we will soon find ourselves serving as the creampuff between other superior teams conference schedule. With the suppossed great recruiting we have, why can't we ever win BIG games?

all true but hamilton will continue to give PF the nod b/c of his 98 year until there are only 70-75000 people in the stands....be heard Hey Mike M thanks for your interest in the vols. GO BIG ORANGE

Wasn't it the "old ball coach" himself who said "The two most overrated stats in colege football are time of possession and Phil Fulmer's winning percentage?"
Judge for yourself.

To me, it goes way beyond winning and losing. I know you didn't quite mean that you only watch because we're good. But I'm just sick of people acting like UT football owes them something AND that they should only take the time to watch if the team meets their standards. I don't really follow Tennessee because they usually win, and I really don't think you do either. When we become cut throat and so focused on winning, I think we forget what made us fall in love with it to begin with.

I know this writer, and I can assure all of you---he is one of the most diehard Vols fans in Knoxville and in the stands every week.

Excellent article Cliff!
I would be even more impressed if I and many other Vol fans hadn't been reading and contributing to the very same viewpoints backed up by the very same stats at a web site started several years ago by disgruntled UT football fans (www.outermonvolia.com).
Go see for yourself - those same stats and many more are tacked to the top of the Football page. The core membership of that website consists of highly educated, analytical, successful people who love the University of Tennessee much more than they do the "University of Fulmer". Sadly, it seems much of UT's football fan base is more enamored with the coach they admire than the long term success of the program itself. Many of the frequent posters at "Outer MonVolia" predicted the state of the program we saw in 05 and so far this year as long ago as 1999. Keep up the good work!

Nailed it, right on target, but let me add a few numbers To the Mix, as they say. Fulmer is 4-15 in his last 19 games vs. SEC teams that finished the season with a winning record. He is 15-13 in his last 28 games and 3-5 in his last eight games with the wins coming over Kentucky (barely), Vanderbilt and Southern Mississippi. He has been humiliated in three of his last four bowl appearances stretching over five years by three unranked teams, Maryland, Clemson and Penn State.
I would suggest you all go to secsports.com, click on football and then statistics. You will be astonished to see the once proud Big Orange at the very bottom of the league in several major catergories including scoring defense, rushing defense and offensive rushing.
This year will mark the 10th season without an SEC title and nine years since the Vols last played in a big money BCS contest. Intolerable and pathetic are the adjectives that come to mind first.

Great article. Good point about Foster and Coker but don't forget about the use of Montario Hardesty or the lack thereof.
He isn't their biggest or fastest back but he will deliever a blow before taking one. Keep it up Cliff
