Habitat for Humanity will have its first meeting of the school year on Monday, Sept. 10, at 6p.m. in room 113 of the Humanities/Social Sciences (HSS) building. Membership is only required to participate in Habitat's events; all are welcome to attend meetings.
Habitat for Humanity has a number of opportunities for students to get involved. They have tentatively scheduled "Shanty Town," a fundraising event for Sept. 19, in the Presidential Courtyard. Students will spend the night in cardboard boxes to raise money from sponsors to benefit the homeless. Other events include a benefit concert in Presidential Court on Sept. 27, and a talent show on Nov. 17. Auditions for the talent show will be Oct. 17-18, and all talents are welcome.
Also in Nov., Habitat will have collection boxes in the resident halls as well as other locations. They will be collecting old blankets, coats, shoes, and clothes for the homeless. Anyone interested in building homes should contact Habitat. Every weekend throughout the semester, Habitat will be working on houses in both Anderson and Knox counties.
For Spring Break, Habitat will be participating in the "Collegiate Challenge" where the group will travel to another state and build a house for a week. Habitat's president, Tyler McCurry, a senior in BCMB, is also working with Habitat International in hopes of planning a trip to northern Ireland in May. Habitat also plans to enter teams in both the Relay for Life and the Race for the Cure.
The club will meet every other week throughout the semester. Dues are $25 for the entire year and $15 for one semester. For more information you can go to Habitat for Humanity's website.
