Approximately 20 journalism and electronic media students will get a taste of what working in New York City is like. Along with two journalism professors, Dr. Naeemah Clark and Dr. Lyn Lepre, the students will explore the professional and cultural sides of the city Sept. 30-Oct. 5.

The School of Journalism and Electronic Media has taken this trip annually for the past two years to give students the chance to connect with professionals in the magazine, newspaper, broadcast and advertising industries.

"Thanks to the opportunity of this media tour, I made valuable connections that ultimately helped me obtain my internship at OK! Magazine this past summer," said Julie Proffitt, senior in journalism and electronic media. "I recommend this trip for every journalism student, it opens your eyes and helps you truly understand the industry better."

During the five-day period, students meet with UT alumni that have moved to New York City and are currently pursuing a career in journalism. Additionally, students have the chance to shadow professionals in their desired field and attend various seminars and panels.

"I firmly believe that students learn best by doing" -Dr. Lyn Lepre, UT journalism professor"I firmly believe that students learn best by doing," Lepre said. "The New York City trip gives UT students the chance to learn outside our own Knoxville community in the larger Manhattan media. It provides them with the context they may not have been able to acquire in class and we all know that getting that foot in the door is so important."

Students must be 21 years or older and enrolled as a journalism and electronic media student in order to go on the media tour. The trip is held annually. for more information on next year's trip, please visit room 333 in the Communications Building or call (865) 974-5155.
