Hosted by the Poynter Institute, Poynter.org is a website that provides online assistance to all writers.
One can post a resume, find potential jobs and receive tips on better writing techniques. They publish interesting articles related to the journalism and photojournalism fields, and their motto is "The Poynter Institute is a school for journalists, future journalists, and teachers of journalists."
The Poynter.org staff is experienced, not compiled of former would-have-beens and they often head back into the newsroom to refresh themselves on the daily demands that a journalist encounters.
Poynter.org has gone from being the new kid on the block to the big kid on the block. - Dr. Roy Clark
The Poynter Institute also hosts several seminars in a variety of subjects: broadcast/online, education, ethics, leadership and management, reporting, writing, editing, and visual. These seminars have 16 to 18 participants - some of them being faculty members and successful journalists of our day.
According to the website, "Poynter seminars teach new skills and ways of thinking that help you produce authoritative, creative and engaging news reports, programs and publications that will serve your communities."
This website also provides links to other reputable sites, offering advice on such topics as how to write an obituary and how to freelance overseas.
They have several different publications. In 2003, they celebrated their 25th anniversary of the Best Newspaper Writing series. Other publications include Poynter Leadership: Essential Skills & Values, Poynter Leaderships: Personal & Powerful and Leading by Example.
"The remarkable thing to me is that in seven short years, Poynter.org has gone from being the new kid on the block to the big kid on the block," said Dr. Roy Clark, vice president and senior scholar at the Poynter Institute. "The key decision was to hire Jim Romenesko."
Romenesko joined the Poynter staff in 1999 after impressing administration with his MediaGossip.com website.
"His blog on media news became the golden portal through which many folks found the site," Dr. Clark said. "It has grown to become a powerful extension of Poynter's teaching on journalism craft and values."
The Poynter Institute is based in St. Petersburg, Florida. With their website they are able to touch a wider group of journalists.
