Several teams have a successful weekend

While the Tennessee football squad turned in a disappointing performance at Alabama last weekend, several other UT teams had solid showings.

  • Vols Tennis: The top performance for the Vols at the ITA Southeast Individual Indoor Regionals in Lexington, Ky. Came from J.P. Smith. Smith fell in the singles round of 16 after beating No. 76 Marc Rocafort (Middle Tennessee) in the round of 32. Boris Conkic, Chris Racz and Davey Sandgren all advanced to the round of 32 but lost. Smith also paired up with Sandgren in doubles play. The two reached the round of 16, but lost.
  • Vols Swimming and Diving: Vols' swimming and diving started the season with a win over Louisville 165-130. Seniors Michael Wolfe and Octavio Alesi each had two individual victories in the meet, while Nolan Morrell, Geoff Sanders, Barry Murphy and Brad Craig picked up one swimming victory each. Michael Muscari and Ryan Rincon both won an event in the diving matches.
  • Lady Vols Tennis: Ghizela Schutte lasted the longest of the Lady Vols at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C. Schutte advanced all the way to the round of 16 where she lost to Ellah Nze (Duke).
  • Lady Vols Rowing: On Saturday, the Lady Vols rowing team won the Club 8+ gold at the Head of the Charles Regatta located in Boston, Mass. On Sunday, the Lady Vols earned a program-best, fifth-place finish in the championship 8+ race. They also finished in 15th place at the championships in the 4+ event.
  • Lady Vols Swimming and Diving: The Lady Vols swimming and diving team dominated Louisville 207-93 in their match on Saturday. They won 14 of the 15 events in the match and also set five pool records. Carly Mathes won three different individual events to lead the Lady Vols. Aleksa Akerfelds, Michele King and Christine Magnuson all had two individual wins.
  • Lady Vols Volleyball: The VolleyVols had a rough week as they lost all three of their games. On Tuesday, they lost at Louisville 3-1. On Friday, the team lost a close match at Mississippi State 3-2. They won games one and four but lost game five, 15 - 12. They finished off the weekend and the road trip with a 3-0 loss at Alabama.

This Week:

  • Vols Tennis will go to Alabama for the Crimson Tide Championships from Friday to Sunday.
  • The Vols Golf team will be back in action at the Calloway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championship in Greensboro, Ga. from Sunday to Tuesday.
  • The Vols and Lady Vols swimming and diving teams will host South Carolina and Kentucky on Friday.
  • The Vols and Lady Vols cross country teams will compete in the SEC Championships on Saturday in Lexington, Ky.
  • The VolleyVols will host Georgia on Friday and Auburn on Sunday.
  • Lady Vols soccer will go to Alabama on Thursday and will host Auburn on Sunday.
