Lady Vols too much for Mississippi State

The No. 13 Lady Vols soccer team used a second half scoring eruption to seal a 4-0 win over Mississippi State at Regal Soccer Stadium on Sunday.

In the 57th minute, Kylee Rossi got behind the Lady Bulldog defense and forced the goalkeeper to commit before tucking the ball into the net to finally give the Lady Vols a much needed cushion at 2-0.

"The first goal in the second half was a world-class goal because it combined the three forwards and an attacking mid(fielder)," head coach Angela Kelly said.

"That's just the sign of having a dynamic front line and it was in a limited amount of touches, so that was just a world-class goal."

Mississippi State had no answer as the Lady Vols used that momentum to score two more goals in the next nine minutes to put the game out of reach.

Senior forward Emily Redberg did the rest of the damage with an unassisted, breakaway goal in the 60th minute and a second goal in the 66th minute off an assist from Mick Ingram.

"The momentum was building and we were getting there," Redberg said. "We just needed to put one in, so once Kylee put hers in it just kind of shifted and we were able to just relax and put some balls in the net and close the game away."

The Lady Vols had 31 shots compared to just two for Mississippi St, as the Lady Bulldogs struggled to get any kind of offense going throughout the entire game.

Tennessee failed to take advantage of their many shot opportunities until the 10th minute when Rossi passed the ball to a well-positioned Tanya Emerson, and Emerson's shot found the goal for the first score of the game.

The Lady Vols nearly extended the lead just seconds before Rossi's goal when several shots from point-blank range bounced off the Mississippi State goal-keeper, one of which appeared to cross the goal line, but the shot was not ruled a goal.

Rossi and company managed to break through just moments later, though, and Coach Kelly credits her team's depth for their ability to finish strong in the second half.

"I was, for the first time in my coaching career, really pleased to play everybody on the bench that was able and willing," Kelly said. "That's just a credit to the team and the talent of our depth." "We don't drop in our level when we sub people in, and we need to be able to rest legs." Coach Kelly

Tennessee (11-2-2, 6-1-1) will return to the field at Alabama Thursday night at 8 p.m in a match-up with a Crimson Tide team that resembles the Lady Vols, according to Coach Kelly.

"They battle and they have a ton of pride, and they fight and we're just going to have to be well-organized and come in with a lot of emotional energy and be able to take care of our opportunities."
