Saturday, Oct. 20, 11,000 people ran in Knoxville's annual Race for the Cure, the biggest year yet for Knoxville.

Race for the Cure, an event of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, is held all over the country, raising money and awareness for breast cancer. Many people participate each year, including survivors, those running in memory of loved ones who have died and people running in celebration of those who have survived.

Knoxville held its event at World's Fair Park. The 5,000-meter race took place at 8:30 a.m., and the Family Walk/Run, a 1,000-meter event, was at 9 a.m.

This year Pat Summitt, coach of UT's women's basketball team and DJs from WJXB-B97.5 were in attendance. Summitt helped host the event and announced the winners of the 5k race.

Among the participants was Janice Davis, a survivor of breast cancer. She was diagnosed on Aug. 17, 2006. On Jan. 29, 2007 she was declared cancer-free.

"I am thankful that God has chose to keep me here," Davis said in reference to her recovery. Her husband was a big support during her recovery, she said. She also attributes part of her recovery to the UT Medical Center. "Those at UT hospital were like angels," she said.

Mary Veino, a survivor, said she needed to do the Race for the Cure for her three daughters and five grandchildren.

"I am doing this for them," Veino said. She participated in the Family Walk/Run. This was her first year participating in the race.

Also in attendance was UT's chapter of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and the UT men's track team.
