Jim and Natalie Haslam, philanthropic leaders around Knoxville, have donated $5 million to UT to finance the Haslam Scholars Program. The program will be instituted in the fall of 2008 and will be an honors program dedicated to providing opportunities to 15 of the nation's leading students.

Haslam is the chairman of the board of Pilot Travel Centers LLC and also chairman of the board and president of Pilot Corp., both stationed in Knoxville.

No family has been more supportive to UT than the Haslams and words cannot properly express our gratitude. Chancellor Loren Crabtree $2.5 million of the Haslam's new gift will be dedicated to the Haslam Scholars program and the remaining $2.5 million will be for the Haslam Family Professorship and Chair Endowment. These programs were both established by Jim and Natalie Haslam's son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Dee Haslam. Jimmy and Dee were part of a $10 million gift to UT announced on Oct. 2.

"The most recent investment in the University of Tennessee from Jim and Natalie Haslam speaks directly to what the university is all about...students and faculty," said Linda Davidson, Vice Chancellor for Alumni Development and Affairs said.

This is the second donation from the Haslams in two years, the first of which was at $32.5 million donation to the university to benefit several different programs around campus such as the Howard Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy, the School of Music and the College of Business Administration.

"No family has been more supportive to UT than the Haslams and words cannot properly express our gratitude," Chancellor Loren Crabtree said in a recent press release. "They recognize UT Knoxville's potential to become a leading public research university and these gifts place us at the forefront of recruiting efforts for the best and brightest students and faculty."

Students involved in the Haslam Scholars Program will be part of a group mentored by UT faculty members and will also receive the Chancellor's scholarship. This program is set to resemble programs such as the Jefferson Scholars Program at the University of Virginia or the Morehead-Cain Scholarship at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

Students will also receive benefits such as a study-abroad experience, money to support a senior thesis, and travel to present their work. Students interested in the Haslam Scholars Program must apply by Nov. 1.

The Haslam Family Professorship and Chair Endowment will give UT an advantage in recruiting and hiring faculty members who are at the top in their respective fields.

Both of the Haslam's gifts will be a part of the "Campaign for Tennessee," a fundraising effort that continues until 2011.
