The Lambda Student Union celebrated National Coming Out Day with a table on the Pedestrian Walkway from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9.
National Coming Out Day is officially Oct. 11 but will be recognized on campus before students leave for fall break, says LSU president Amy Davidson. The day was recognized with information available to all students, faculty and staff regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
The LSU is the student organization of allies of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer questioning and straight population on campus. LSU has between 40-50 active members.
The information booth provided literature including a guide for those who wish to ‘come out', candy, balloons, a pamphlet about the LSU, and a guide for straight allies of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer questioning and straight community.
"[The booth] shows the presence of the community on campus. We hope it will also provide people information on coming out regarding one's own self as well as dealing with friends, family and acquaintances who ‘come out'," Davidson said before the event was held.
The first general body meeting of LSU was held Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. According to the organization's website, LSU's involvement in UT's homecoming was discussed, as well as a draft of LSU's first political policy.
