The football team may have been off this weekend, but there were still plenty of Vol teams in action elsewhere in the country. While the Lady Vols soccer team and VolleyVols played at home, several other teams went on the road to compete. Here's a recap of how the Vols and Lady Vols faired on the road:
- Tennis: Tennessee freshman J.P. Smith defeated the nation's 70th-ranked singles player Monday to advance to the second round of the Polo Ralph Lauren ITA All-American Championships played in Tulsa, Okla. Smith faces Ed Corrie of Texas in the second round of qualifying Tuesday. Smith needs to win two more matches to join teammate Chris Racz in the 64-man main draw.
- Golf: The Tennessee men's golf team finished eighth at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational, which concluded Monday at Olympia Fields Country Club in Chicago. The Vols shot a final round 13-over-par 293 and wrapped up their second top-10 finish of the 2007-08 season. Tennessee finished with a tournament scorecard of 289-303-293--885. Charlie Ford led the Vols with a 1-under-par 69 in the third and final round. The senior finished tied for 7th, marking his third top-10 finish in his last five tournaments.
- Cross Country: The Tennessee men's cross country team scored 199 points and finished fourth at the 8K Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Ky., on Saturday. Andrew Press, a Knoxville native and junior transfer from William & Mary, led the Vols with his 15th-place, 24:26.72 finish.
- Lady Vols Cross Country: University of Tennessee junior Sarah Bowman once again played the role of pacesetter, charting a top-10 finish as the 28th-ranked Lady Volunteers placed eighth out of 47 teams Friday afternoon at Lehigh University's Brooks Paul Short Run. A native of Warrenton, Va., Bowman covered the 6,000-meter Goodman Campus Course in 20 minutes, 51 seconds to finish ninth out of 317 runners in the Women's College Brown Championship Race.
- Lady Vols Tennis: The University of Tennessee women's tennis team concluded a successful stay at the Furman Fall Classic with a perfect day in singles play Sunday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C. All seven players picked up victories, with sophomore Zsófia Zubor, junior Samantha Orlin and freshman Rosalía Alda each claiming flight titles. The Lady Vols' most impressive victory of the day came in flight seven, where Alda swept Furman's Jennifer Betts, 6-0, 6-0. The victory gave the freshman the first flight title of her career and moved her overall singles record to 5-1.
This week the Vol tennis team continues play in the All-American Championships and also competes in the Georgia Tech Invitational, the Lady Vol golf team travels to Chapel Hill, North Carolina for the Tar Heel Invitational, the No. 7 Lady Vol soccer team travles to LSU and Arkansas, the Lady Vol tennis team travels to California for the All-American Tournament and the VolleyVols travel to South Carolina and Florida.
