For its grand opening, the Valarium will be hosting Dinosaur Jr. on Nov. 29 at 7 p.m.
Some of you may remember the ill-fated Electric Ballroom off Western Avenue, just outside of downtown Knoxville. The owners of Blue Cats have taken over the building and remodeled it to better suit a larger concert environment that Blue Cats is not able to provide.
What better way to break it in than to host the reunion of one of grunge and alternative rock's most influential acts.
Formed in Amherst, Mass. in 1984, the band released several albums over the years, most notably "Bug," "Green Mind" and "Without a Sound," before breaking up due to inner band turmoil. This year has seen the release of their newest effort, "Beyond," an album that has been hailed as a true return to form for the band, recapturing the band’s signature wall of sound and loud, sonic solos. It's their first studio album with the original lineup since "Bug" in 1988. Guitarist J Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Murph were the band's founding members, but Mascis is the only member who has remained a staple in the band.
If you are a fan of rock music, this promises to be one of the best shows in Knoxville this year. Not only will you be seeing one of alternative rock's most influential acts, but also the chance to be a part of the grand opening party for the Valarium. Awesome Color will kick off the festivities with their unique sound, bringing hints of Sonic Youth to their music. The show is for all ages and tickets are $22.50 in advance or $25 at the door.
