In a game that took two overtime periods to decide a winner, the Lady Vols' soccer squad pulled out a 1-0 victory to send them to the fifth "Sweet 16" in program history.
Much like the first round matchup with the Furman Paladins, the Lady Vols' got off to a quick start against Clemson.
In the third minute of the game, Kylee Rossi broke past the defense and struck the ball with her left foot but missed wide to the left as Clemson defender Molly Johnson came prevented Rossi from taking a clear shot on goal.
Moments later, Emily Redberg passed the ball through the Clemson defense to Tanya Emerson in front of the goal, but Ashley Phillips, Clemson's goalkeeper, dove in at the last second to take the ball from Emerson's feet.
When the first half came to a close, both teams had taken a huge amount of attmepts on goal but were hampered by a high amount of fouls. In the first half alone, Clemson had seven fouls and Tennessee had five.
The second half was again full of opportunities for both teams.
One of the best opportunities for the Lady Vols came when Kylee Rossi found Mick Imgram wide open in the penalty box.
Ingram controlled the ball and shot hard to the left post, but Phillips continued her strong day with another diving save to keep the ball out of the net.
By the end of regulation, both Jaimel Johnson and Ashley Phillips had kept a clean sheet, which sent the game into sudden-victory overtime.
While the first overtime period was dominated by midfield play, Kylee Rossi finally found the back of the net in the fourth minute of the second overtime. The goal came after the ball was cleared to the feet of Mick Imgram. Imgram then sent the ball ahead to Rossi where she beat the last defender and scored the match-winner from 15 yards out.
The goal was Rossi's 30th in her career, fourth golden goal and 12th match winner, all of which set career program records.
"It's a great honor but I have to credit my whole team," said Rossi. "I can't do it by myself obviously.""I'm so blessed to have the talent I have and the teammates I have and all their support." Kylee Rossi, after the Lady Vols' win
Jaimel Johnson, Tennessee's first-team All-SEC goalkeeper, also had a solid performance.
Johnson finished the game with five saves and was credited with the shut-out, her 11th this season.
"I think as a team today, every person that stepped on the field worked together and contributed so I don't give myself a shutout, I would say it's more of a team shutout," said Johnson.
After Sunday's win, the Lady Vols have posted an all-time record of 9-0-1 when playing NCAA Tournament games at home.
The Lady Vols will take on the second-seeded Portland Pilots in the Sweet 16 next weekend. The match is currently scheduled for Saturday at Merlo Field in Portland, Oregon.
