Here's a quick rundown of what to look for on the defensive side of the ball in Saturday's Orange and White Game.
Defensive Line
Projected Starters: 93-Xavier Mitchell, 98-Demonte' Bolden, 99-J.T. Mapu, 89-Antonio Reynolds
Reserves: 91-Robert Ayers, 94-Wes Brown, 95-Walter Fisher, 55-Dan Williams, 97-Chase Nelson, 56-Michael Crain, 46-Andre Mathis, 52-Victor Thomas, 58-Donald Langley
The Vols appear to be pretty set at defensive end with the top four from a year ago returning in Mitchell, Reynolds, Ayers, and Brown.
Run defense was a huge problem for Tennessee late last season, and with the top three defensive tackles from a year ago all graduating, the Vols face major questions on the interior of the line.
Bolden is the only returning tackle who amassed double-digit stops last season.
Mapu and Fisher are a pair of players who were highly touted coming to Knoxville, but have not produced much since arriving. They will be counted on to take a step forward.
Donald Langley is a freshman who enrolled a semester early in order to go through spring practice, and if upperclassmen do not step up look for him to contribute right off the bat.
According to Coach Fulmer, the team will look at playing with four linebackers more often this season, with Ayers playing the role of a pass-rushing linebacker.
Linebacker
Projected Starters: 7-Jerod Mayo, 39-Ryan Karl, 5-Rico McCoy
Reserves: 35-Ellix Wilson, 48-Adam Myers-White, 34-Dorian Davis, 42-LaMarcus Thompson
Despite losing second-leading tackler Marvin Mitchell, the Vols appear to be stacked at linebacker.
Mayo will move to the middle, and is poised to become one of the best in the nation.
He will be flanked by Karl, the quarterback of the defense, and McCoy, a sophomore ready for a breakout season.
Providing depth will be Wilson and Myers-White, two players with potential.
Davis and Thompson have each had solid springs but will probably be relegated to special teams duty once the regular season rolls around.
Secondary
Projected Starters: 36-Roshaun Fellows, 33-Jonathan Hefney, 38-Antonio Wardlow, 31-Marsalous Johnson
Reserves: 23-Ricardo Kemp, 37-Antonio Gaines, 19-Jarrod Parish, 15-Sinclair Cannon, 25-Art Evans
The secondary will look much different than last season, with the team looking to replace three starters from a year ago.
Hefney, the team's leading tackler last season, will anchor the defensive backfield and if the season started today would be flanked by Wardlow at safety.
Expect Fellows to return from injury and start at one corner, and for now be paired with Marsalous Johnson at the other corner.
Kemp and Gaines both have game experience and should provide some depth, while Parish has had a solid spring and Evans is an intriguing freshman who could challenge for playing time.
Johnson and Wardlow are starters for now but will probably be replaced by newcomers once the regular season arrives.
