Finally all the talk of who is in and who is out is over. Brackets can finally start being filled out and tournament pools can start to form.
But before we get too far into March Madness here is how teams finished in the final Big 16:
- Ohio State (29-3) made light work of the Big Ten in the conference tournament. The Buckeyes weren't done any favors though when the selection committee placed them as the overall third No. 1 seed. The Big Dance should prove to be a tougher test than the Big 10 tournament was last week in Chicago.
- Kansas (30-4) got pushed to their limits by Texas in the Big 12 championship game. They were able to hold onto for a 67-61 overtime victory. Kansas has now won 11 in a row and is playing really good basketball. The Jayhawks got the No. 1 seed in the West bracket so even they should be able to avoid a first round upset that has plagued them the past few years.
- Florida (29-5) played scary good in the SEC Tournament. While the rest of the SEC East struggled, Florida regained their championship form. The Gators got the number one overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and will be ready to make a repeat run to defend their title.
- Georgetown (26-6) was able to outlast Notre Dame in the Big East semifinals and then played a near perfect game against Pittsburgh to win their first conference tournament since 1989. The Hoyas have the size and guard play to make a deep run into the tournament.
- Memphis (30-3) as expected steamed rolled through the Conference USA Tournament. They were able to get a No. 2 seed in the tournament despite not playing a ranked opponent since mid-December. They will either finally prove that they are an elite team or be exposed as a pretender.
- UCLA (25-5) finished the season on a down slide losing their last regular season game and their opening round game in the Pac 10 tournament. I was also wrong last week when I said they could not win another game and still get a one seed; they got a two seed in the West. They won't mind the seed too much considering they won't have to leave the state of California until the Final Four.
- North Carolina (28-6) won the ACC Tournament by defeating N.C. State 89-80 and in doing so earmed a No. 1 seed for the Big Dance. But I'm not sold on them. They lack the defensive ability to win it all and a bad shooting night could lead to an early exit for the Tar Heels.
- Texas A&M (25-6) lost to Oklahoma State in the semifinals in the Big 12 Tournament. The Aggies earned a No. 3 seed and will be a tough out for any team in the tournament. While Acie Law is as talented as any player in the country he will need help to carry the Aggies deep into the tournament.
- Wisconsin (29-5) fell to Ohio State in the Big 10 Championship and really failed to make the game competitive. They were unable to take advantage of Ohio State's Greg Oden being in foul trouble for most the first half and as usual struggled to put up points. If they have to score more the 55 points to win a game in the tournament they will be headed back to Wisconsin.
- Oregon (26-7) put on an offensive clinic in the Pac 10 Championship game against USC. The Ducks routed USC 81-57 in behind the performance of Bryce Taylor. Taylor was a perfect 11-11 from the field including 7-7 from behind the arc. The Ducks shot a blistering 58.3 percent from the field and if they keep that up will be nearly unstoppable.
- Maryland (24-8) was an early exit in their conference tournament when they failed to take care of business against Miami. They had won seven in a row and Gary Williams should be able to re-focus his team and have them ready to take on their opening round opponent Davidson. The Terps got a good draw by playing their first two games in Buffalo.
- Pittsburgh (27-7) finally started to play well again before running into the Hoyas in the Big East Championship. Unfortunately they were completely overmatched in that game. Pittsburgh could have a tough second round game against the Duke Blue Devils.
- Louisville (23-9) got good news and bad news when the brackets were revealed. The good news is they are playing in Lexington, Ky., a mere hour drive on I-64. The bad news is they got a six seed and have to play the Stanford Cardinal and if they get past them they will take on Texas A&M. Louisville will need their perimeter shooters to be lights out if they want to advance pass the second round.
- Texas (24-9) couldn't pull off the upset against Kansas in the championship game but are still looking impressive in behind Kevin Durant. Durant finished with 37 points and 10 rebounds against Kansas. Texas looks to have an easy road to the Sweet 16 where they will likely take on UNC.
- UNLV (28-6) has won their past seven games and defeated BYU 78-70 and secured a seven seed in the tournament. Assuming UNLV can get pass Georgia Tech in the first round, they could be poised for an upset of Wisconsin considering UNLV averages 75.3 points per game.
- Southern Illinois (27-6) lost their conference tournament but are still a solid basketball team. The Salukis earned a No. 4 seed and will get to play close to home in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. They have all ready beaten likely second round opponent Virginia Tech 69-64 earlier this season.
New to the rankings: Nevada, Southern Illinois
Dropped out: Tennessee, Butler
