If any fans were hoping for offensive fireworks at Saturday's scrimmage, they would have been better off flying a kite.
That's about all the wind was good for as Tennessee knocked out their first scrimmage of the spring and their first full week of practice this weekend in a blustery Neyland Stadium.
The Vols returned to Neyland Stadium for the first time since the Outback Bowl scrimmage in December.
This time it was a little warmer, but mother nature found another way to mess up the day.
Wind gusts of up to 45 miles per hour kept the offense grounded for most of the afternoon. That didn’t stop the defense from making big plays, however.
Antonio Gaines picked off a bobbled pass from Erik Ainge and returned it 37 yards for a score.
Dorian Davis also scored, fielding a fumble from backup quarterback Nick Stevens and taking it 55 yards. Davis also finished with a team-tying seven tackles.
Ainge managed 90 yards through the air, mostly on short passes, and finished with 9-of-26 on the afternoon.
Backup quarterback Jonathan Crompton was 16-of-24 for 108 yards and a touchdown.
The stable of running-backs racked up 208 total yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
Arian Foster ran for 98 yards and two touchdowns, while Lamarcus Coker picked up 60 yards on only eight carries.
Tennessee got a lot of work done this past week.
The Vols held two three hour practices during the week and capped it off with nearly a three hour scrimmage on Saturday.
Practice will continue on Tuesday and Thursday this week.
The Vols will then take a breather the next week for Spring Break.
Tennessee has now completed six practices, four of which have been in full pads.
