Hollywood's finest leading men and women turned out for the 13th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night. The night proved to be one of typical award show glitz, but held few surprises.
Many of the same performers who won Golden Globes earlier this month won for the same performance at the SAG Awards. Helen Mirren took home two awards for playing two different Queen Elizabeths. Forest Whitaker also won for a royal role, taking home leading male actor in a film for his performance as King Idi Amin of Uganda in "The Last King of Scotland."
Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy both won supporting awards for their roles in "Dreamgirls." They both look to be the frontrunners to win in their categories at next month's Academy Awards.
In television, "Grey's Anatomy" won the award for best ensemble cast in a drama, with "The Office" winning for best ensemble cast in a comedy.
Julie Andrews received a special life achievement award. Her performances in films like The Sound of Music and "Mary Poppins" are legendary. Andrews went on to thank her peers in the room.
"To be recognized by one's colleagues in this manner is honestly something I could never have imagined," said Andrews.
The only real surprise of the night came when "Little Miss Sunshine" won the award for best ensemble cast in a film, the SAG Awards' equivalent of a best picture. Against stiff competition like "The Departed," "Babel," and "Dreamgirls," the small, independent film came out on top.
The film's ten year old star, Abigail Breslin, had very few words for the audience.
The Screen Actors Guild is Hollywood's largest labor union representing actors. They also pride themselves on their award show being the only one where actors honor fellow actors.
