Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy takes the stage alone for an intimate acoustic set this Tuesday night, Jan. 30 at 8 p.m. at the Bijou Theater.
Tweedy is currently on tour supporting his DVD, Sunken Treasure: Live in the Pacific Northwest. He and the rest of Wilco are also busy putting the finishing touches on their sixth studio album, which they’re calling Sky Blue Sky, to be ready for its scheduled May release.
Tuesday night, Tweedy will play songs out of the extensive music catalogue from his bands Uncle Tupelo, Loose Fur and Wilco, but he will not be bound by any kind of agenda or setlist. His solo shows are meant to be an intimate experience, as Tweedy pulls the listener in through stripped versions of his songs and his conversational interaction.
There are few better places to feel that intimacy than the Bijou Theater. Tom Bugg, the theater’s general manager, is looking forward to the experience a Jeff Tweedy show offers. “It is a great opportunity to see [Tweedy] in an acoustic setting,” Bugg said. “I try not to have expectations for shows, but I think this will be a very intimate one.”
Tweedy brings the history of the alt-country genre to the stage as well. In the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, his band Uncle Tupelo unofficially led the new alt-country movement. Even now, he is still taking music in different and exciting directions.
“There are very few artists out there today that put out as much good material as [Tweedy] does,” Bugg said. “It seems like every year he puts out a great album, whether it’s with Wilco or by himself.”
Tickets to the show are still available through the Bijou Theater Web site, or by phone through Tickets Unlimited (865-656-4444).
