In the ever-changing world of technology, the demand for people with computer skills is growing. As children of the technological age, it is expected that we have some proficiency in basic computer programs.
The Office of Information Technology offers several opportunities for climbing that ladder to proficiency in many programs, including JavaScript and Excel.
OIT`s computer based training is interactive and can teach at any pace. There are hundreds of courses offered for beginner and advanced users. Best of all, it is absolutely free to UT students.
It is nice to have access to a program like this 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. You do it on your own time and in any particular place —Bruce Delaney
OIT`s computer based training is flexible and convenient. For example, if you want to learn how to create charts and graphs, you simply navigate to that section. If you only have 15 minutes to spare, you can bookmark where stop and continue your training later.
At the end of their training, trainees may opt to take the final test. If their score is at least 70%, a certificate can be printed online or mailed to the user.
"We all know a bit of Microsoft Word, but at some point we have to learn about something we don't know much about. By investing 2 or 3 hours we get a firm foundation and obviously the quality is good because it puts people in the position to take certification tests," says system administrator Bruce Delaney.
Computer based training has been around for 10 years and the University of Tennessee was the first institute in the U.S. to use the the system. Now students at universities across the state, such as University of Memphis and UT Chattanooga, have access to this program.
Computer based training is offered to faculty and staff as well.
