The UT branch of College Democrats signed up 300 new members to its e-mail list this year and got nearly 100 people to register to vote.

The organization reached many of its set goals for this year, including raising $650 in donations, and set even bigger ones for 2008.

"We were very excited with the turnout this semester. We set up in the courtyard for two days and did some recruiting. We had great support from members, students and faculty," said CD president Jake Proffitt.

For the upcoming year, members plan to set up for the first three weeks of the spring semester at the pedestrian walkway and in presidential courtyard, promoting people to vote. They also plan to promote campaign material for the each of the democratic presidential candidates.

"We really want to stress how important it is for people to vote. Having the freedom to voice our opinion is one of the most powerful things we can do, and all of us should take advantage of it," Proffitt said.

Other than spreading the word about voting, members are working on every democratic campaign including Clinton, Obama, Edwards, Biden and Richardson.

Once the primaries are selected after Feb. 5, known as Super Tuesday, members plan to work on the campaign of the democratic nominee elected.

Proffitt also mentioned purchasing a spot on the UT campus to fix up as a way to give back to the university.

Aside from the presidential elections coming up, members of College Democrats plan to work on the Knox County Commission and County General elections next year.

One of the most exciting events coming up for the group of college students participating in this organization is the 2008 elections.

"We are so excited about this year. History is in the making with the democratic nominees. It's just amazing to be a part of it all. We are all so excited about the opportunity to work on the campaigns," Proffitt said.
