With the weather cooperating the Vols' bats came to life.

After two of their three games against Mississippi State were rained out over the weekend the Vols responded by defeating Furman 12-7 Tuesday night.

The Vols (21-14) came to bat in the seventh inning tied 5-5 in a back-and-forth game, when the wheels feel off for Furman and relief pitcher Matt Klinker.

Tony Delmanico reached base after Furman's catcher Nicholas Karow missed a third strike and J.P. Arencibia was hit by a pitch, Yan Gomes blasted a 3-run home run.

The struggle continued for Furman.

After an error by right fielder Will Stembridge on a routine fly ball, Klinker plunked another Volunteer batter and Shawn Griffin delivered the knock out blow by hitting a 3-run homerun to put the Vols up 11-5.

Until the seventh inning the Vols had been struggling with Furman (10-26).

Furman scored a run in the first two innings by playing small ball.

The Vols responded in the third inning when right fielder Adam Simunic continued his hot hitting with a lead off single.

Tennessee's next batter, centerfielder Julio Borbon hit a two run homerun to tie the game. Borbon would add another homerun in the eighth inning to put the cap on the Vols five-homerun night.

Simunic went 2-4 and is now batting .478 over the past six games.

Furman's leftfielder Jay Jackson responded with a solo shot to put the Paladins back on top. Jackson would assist the Vols next homerun in the fourth inning.

Vols' designated hitter Jeff Lockwood's fly ball to left field was knocked over the wall by Jackson to give Lockwood a homerun and to allow the Vols to tie the game back up.

Even after Furman's disastrous seventh inning they would try to rally back.

The Paladins loaded the bases in the eighth with no outs, but pitcher Aaron Everett was able to induce a double play ball and the Vols got out of the inning only giving up one run.

Furman added another run in the ninth inning.

Vols' starting pitcher Craig Cobb pitched out of trouble all night.

Cobb gave up 11 hits and five runs in 5 1/3 innings pitched.  Relief pitcher Everett earned his first win of the season.

The Vols will play Wednesday night against Lincoln-Memorial at 7:00 p.m.

The game wasn't originally scheduled but the Vols added the game as a result of all the rainouts they've had over the past few weeks.
