The Oakland Raiders are on the clock.

The team has been on the clock since December 31 when they finished with an NFL worst 2-14 record, and they have the first choice of the hundreds of college junior and senior athletes in the 2007 NFL Draft.

The NFL Draft is an event when every team in football selects players out of college that they think will be the right pieces of the puzzle to get them to a Super Bowl.

Oakland, Detroit, Cleveland, Tampa Bay and Arizona hold the top five spots and aim to fill up key positions to help them compete in their division.

JaMarcus Russell, Brady Quinn, Calvin Johnson, Joe Thomas and Gaines Adams all could be taken among the draft's first few picks.

Oakland is in need of a quarterback so Russell or Quinn could be taken first.

Many mock drafts have the Raiders taking Russell, the former LSU quarterback, with the first overall pick, including Mike Nahrstedt.

"Some say the Raiders should take Georgia Tech WR Calvin Johnson, but who would throw him the ball?" said Nahrstedt, the Sporting News Senior Managing Editor.

"Anybody the Raiders can pick up now would be of the Aaron Brooks ilk, and you know how that worked out. It's hard to ignore a QB situation as horrendous as Oakland's, so the Raiders will go with the top-ranked guy. Russell isn't a sure thing, but few quarterbacks are."

Robert Meachem might not go until the second round, but he has great size and speed and is a big play waiting to happen.  Mike Nahrstedt Johnson, a former Georgia Tech wide receiver, is being touted as the best player available.

The wideout has the size at 6'4, hands with 121 receptions in three years in college,  and speed, running under 4.4 seconds in the 40 yard dash at the NFL Comine, to make an immediate impact on Sundays.

He is also highly thought of because he is considered a high character player, and with the recent suspensions to Pacman Jones and Chris Henry every NFL team is placing a lot of emphasis on that area.

"Teams will be much more hesitant to draft a player with character concerns than they were in the past," Nahrstedt said.

"Commissioner Roger Goodell is committed to disciplining law-breakers, and teams won't want to waste high picks on potential problem children."

Amobi Okoye has the most surprising background of any potential first round draftees.

The Nigerian-born Okoye, a defensive tackle, graduated from Louisville at the age of 19, and will be the youngest player ever to be drafted since the NFL/AFL merger in the late '60's.

The Tennessee Volunteers have eleven players entering the draft, with six players expected to definitely be selected and five others who hope to hear their names called.

Wide receiver Robert Meachem, defensive tackle Justin Harrell and offensive tackle Arron Sears could be selected in the first round.

Cory Anderson, Turk McBride and Jonathan Wade are the other three Vols expected get their names called over the weekend.

Other Tennessee players hoping to get drafted are Jayson Swain, Bret Smith, David Ligon, Antwan Stewart and Marvin Mitchell.

Nahrstedt said the most intriguing storyline heading into the draft is the selection of former Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn.

"He once was the most heralded member of this draft class, but his value took a hit as he played his senior season. His stock has risen again post-Combine, but it's still a huge question where he will go. Basically, Quinn could be the league's next great quarterback--or he could be Joey Harrington."

Any player who goes undrafted can sign with any team in the league as a free agent following the draft.
